Many young men and women join the military as a method of enhancing their education. This can either be through fantastic on-the-job training in the field or by using the GI Bill to pay for college. Some obviously use both. One area where they may excel at is in various technological fields. A big problem is that, just like anyone who gets out of school, they have to find a job to utilize what they have learned.
The Military Benefit Association and MetLife released a survey in November that found that 79% of unemployed veterans who have started a job search indicated that they have found it somewhat difficult to translate their military skills into something a civilian employer can relate to. On the other side of the coin, 72% of hiring managers said they found it somewhat difficult to figure out the suitability of a recent veteran’s skill set from a resume.
USTechVets.org: Tech Jobs for Veterans
Recently at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show, USTechVets.org was introduced. This website is designed to help veterans find jobs as well as help employers find veterans with the skills they need. This is a collaborative effort between Monster Worldwide, the Consumer Electronic Association and several technology business groups. The backbone of the website is Monster.com, which began in 1994 as an online recruiting tool.
The site has resources such as a tool that matches a veteran’s skills and training to civilian jobs, a searchable database of jobs in the technology sector and educational resources to help veterans develop skills in the private sector. It even has a page dedicated to the tuition assistance benefit paid to eligible members of the Armed Forces. Monster keeps a database of more than 800,000 veterans resumes and offers veterans direct access to several technology jobs and the opportunity to have their resumes seen by thousands of employers. Even if you have a job, it cannot hurt to look at USTechVets.org to see if a better opportunity is out there.
