New Study Clarifies Relationship Between PTSD and TBI

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI) are two of the most common medical disabilities that veterans suffer. At least one-fifth of our military members who served in Iraq and Afghanistan have either PTSD, TBI, or both.

Now, research is showing that Marines who had suffered a TBI while deployed to war are twice as likely to be diagnosed with PTSD, as well. It is not entirely clear why this is. One theory is that blasts are inherently traumatic, so it is more likely that those exposed to them will suffer from PTSD. Another theory suggests that TBI causes structural changes to the brain that makes PTSD a more likely result.

Over the past several years, VA has taken steps to help veterans with PTSD and TBI receive the help they need. Veterans who have PTSD or TBI may be eligible for VA compensation benefits at a rate payable that is consistent with the severity of their disabilities.
