Government Executive- As of November 5th, 2016 disabled veterans who are former federal employees are eligible for 104 hours of sick leave to attend medical appointments. This Act may also apply to veterans who are currently in the work force. The amount of leave current employees receive for medical appointments would be offset but their existing sick leave. These additional leave hours are effective the first year on the job and after that they would no longer be applied. Previously, newly hired employees did not have access to their sick time until it becomes accrued roughly at the rate of 4 hours per pay period. This may cause Veterans who need ongoing doctors appointments for service related injury’s to burn through sick time very quickly. This Act has been put in place to assist with the continued care of these Veterans.
