SSI Disability Benefits for Children
There is no shame in needing help to cover the cost of raising a child who has a disability.
At Bosley, McKown & Bratch, we know how difficult it can be to raise and take care of kids even when they are perfectly healthy. We also understand the emotional and financial strain that families experience when one or more of their children have a disability.
Established in 1980, our firm and its attorneys are available to help families throughout Indiana with SSI claims and appeals. Disability claims have been a major part of our practice for many years now, and we have developed much in the way of knowledge and resources that can help you. We even have a large network of qualified medical professionals with whom we work, and to whom we may be able to get your child referred.
To speak with a lawyer about your child's situation, at no cost — call us directly using our local or toll free numbers/ Or contact us online and someone from our office will get back to you shortly.
Where Do Children's Disability Benefits Come From?
Generally, children under the age of 18 are not eligible to apply for Social Security disability (SSD) benefits. The reason is that a person's SSD eligibility is based on having worked for at least five of the past 10 years. As a result, children's disability benefits are administered through supplemental security income or SSI, the needs-based companion to the Social Security disability program.
Here are just a few of the many impairments that can qualify children for disability and Medicaid benefits under the supplemental security income program:
- ADD or ADHD
- Autism
- Juvenile diabetes
- Total blindness or deafness
- Cerebral Palsy
- Down Syndrome
- HIV/AIDS
- Severe retardation
- Birth weights under 2 pounds, 10 ounces
- Muscular Dystrophy
For more information on children's disability claims or specific SSD and SSI-qualifying impairments, visit the SSA's official Web site.
