Although anyone can technically "apply" for Social Security disability (SSD) benefits — having any real chance of success is dependent on having a medically documented injury, illness or mental impairment that has prevented you from working for at least 12 months, or is expected to do so.

To actually succeed, the Social Security Administration's office of Disability Determination Services (DDS) must be satisfied that the disability or impairment you have is supported by the evidence you've provided and that it meets the criteria DDS has established for that particular condition. The DDS must also be satisfied that you are not just incapable of returning to your old job, but that you cannot do "other work" either.
In practical terms, this means that the majority of initial claims for Social Security disability benefits are denied because of insufficient medical evidence, doctor's reports that are not carefully-worded to conform the SSA's definitions, or findings of the ability to perform some other type of work.
